Low back pain is the most common injury for golfers. Over 50% of golfers experience back pain!
The strain from the repetitive motion of the golf swing plays a big role in back pain for golfers, especially for the 50+ golfer as we hit the back nine of our lives!
One of the reasons for extra strain on the back is the explosive nature of the golf swing. The downswing happens in less than ¼ of a second and a large amount of force and torque is created in this short period of time. The lower back sustains a compressive force of about 1400 pounds for amateur golfers and about 1700 pounds for professional golfers!
It takes about 1200 pounds of force to cause a disk to herniate and rupture! No wonder golfers struggle with back pain!
Your overall fitness, mobility and core strength play a big part in preventing back pain but so does your swing technique.
Recently, PGA Tour Player, Jason Day has been working to change his lower body action and foot work to help alleviate and prevent the persistent back problems that have plagued his career.
Freeing up your footwork - almost like doing a little golf dance - takes the strain off the lower back and pelvis area making it easier to turn and swing the club.
