“Most golfers stand too far from the golf ball” …Byron NelsonGreat advice from one of greatest of all time, the legendary Byron Nelson. Many top players and teachers have reiterated this advice for years.
The average golfer tends to pay little attention to how they stand and their setup to the ball prior to making a swing. And as soon as things start to go astray, it’s often a path of fiddling with the swing without first addressing some of the simple fundamentals, like standing properly. Just like good posture is a foundation off the course for good health and mobility, it’s also a fundamental position for good golf.
Most golfers stand too far from the ball. As a reaction to poor shots, such as hitting behind the ball, they mistakenly think they need to back away to make better contact. But this is one of the worst things you can do for your swing.
Standing too far away causes you to bend over too much causing your arms to separate from the body too much. This makes it harder to turn and pivot your body effectively, maintain your posture and sync your arm swing to your pivot. All of which results in poor, weak inconsistent contact.
Many swing errors can simply be eliminated by standing closer.
